Day 31 - Jan 31

WOOHOO!!! Congrats to all of you for finishing the Whole 30!!!

I would love to hear about your experiences....here are some questions to think about:

1. what are you most proud of?
2. what physical changes have you noticed?
3. what emotional/mental changes have you noticed?
4. what was your biggest challenge?
5. what are you most excited about?
6. what are you going to do now? are you going to re-introduce some foods?
7. what did you learn?
8. anything else that you want to share!!

I have alot to say - so will post my thoughts in a comment...

Overall I have really enjoyed having this blog, and will likely continue to post my meals as it holds me accountable :)

  1. Ok. Where do I start...

Physical changes: This is a weird one. As some of you know I have been dealing with some hormone issues for the past year - my biggest challenge is that I cannot seem to shed any weight. Despite eating clean, consistent workouts and great sleep - it won't come off. I have an excellent naturopath that is still trying to figure me out. Work in progress.

So - when I stepped on the scale yesterday and saw that I lost 2 pounds - I wasn't totally surprised. Sure - I hoped to lose more - but I am learning that the scale really isn't the best way to measure my success.

Because my measurements tell another story!! Here are the results (compared to Jan 1st)

    chest - lost 1.5"
    waist - lost 1"
    hips - lost 3"
    thigh - lost 1"

This made me happy!! It's so interesting that I lost 2 pounds, but also lost 6.5 inches! I guess I am turning fat into muscle...

Other physical changes are my skin (more clear than it has been in years!) and my nails - so strong and lovely :)

My performace at the gym is improving every day. Yesterday I had a PR (personal record) on my Overhead Squat and felt so strong while doing it. I am super excited to see what I can acheieve while keeping my nutrition clean.

I am most excited about the fact that my sugar cravings are significantly less that they were a month ago. I haven't eaten a peice of gum in 30 days, and don't plan on starting again (this is a BIG one for me)

I learned that I really enjoy eating this way - our meals are so delicious. I love that fruit now tastes like a sweet treat.

As for the future - I don't plan on changing anything. I read in Whole 9's post yesterday that some people don't "feel the magic" until day 45 - I plan to continue being strict until at least day 45, maybe more depending on how I feel. Matt and I want to try for a baby soon - and I know that this is the best possible nutrition for a growing baby & a pregnant mother! I have read alot about paleo pregnancy and I am really committed to doing it. We also plan to raise our children completely paleo.

At this point we have completely rid our kitchen of anything that isn't good - so we would have to go out and buy bad food - which we aren't going to do!!

My biggest challenge is that I still have an emotional relationship with food (mainly sugar) - when I am sad, or when I want to celebrate - I instantly want to indulge. I still have alot of work to do here, but I am well on my way...

Overall - I am so pumped! I am REALLY excited to keep going, I can only imagine the positive results that I will continue to see.

As for Matt - I will let him describe his experience. He won't let me post his before & after pictures - but I can tell you - his muscle definition is pretty impressive!!!! Hello 8 pack ;)

Now I want to hear from all of you!!

  2. Jenny, that's awesome! I can't wait to take my measurements/weight and see how things are after thirty days. I'll need to sit down either tonight or tomorrow and answer all your great questions. Just wanted you to know that I read your posts and Congrats!

  3. Although I fell off the paleo wagon last week when I was sick, I plan on making clean eating part of my life. Most of my meals are paleo but I have been eating bread and some dairy, mostly for breakfast - I just can't do eggs everyday!I definatly think it takes longer than 30 days to detox your body. Since I only lasted around 3 weeks, I didn't get the chance to feel all the benefits of the paleo lifestyle. Like you Jenny, I have an emotional relationship with food, sugar being my biggest downfall. It's a daily struggle but I'm trying to make the right choices. Thanks for all your enthusiasm, motivation and for the daily blog. Although I didn't post everyday, it was interesting and informative to read. Thanks everyone!

  4. Let me start by saying that there is no 8 pack! Maybe if I kept this up for another 30 days there might be, but that's not happening! I am however going to continue for another 10 days as I have a night planned to go out with my buddies on Feb 11th and watch the Canucks.

So, that being said, I lost a total of 8lbs and 2 inches during the whole30. That may not seem like a lot but the real change is in the way I feel, which is awesome! I go to bed early, wake up with ease, I have tons of energy all day, my workouts are getting better, even my skin and nails are amazing!!:) I honestly love eating this way and I know it is the best thing I can do for my overall health.

I am going to continue to eat as clean as I can, with the odd indulgence here and there. I realize it's a slippery slope and I don't want to slide as far as I did before we started this whole30. Like Jenny said. our house is completely free of anything that is not whole30 compliant, so in order cheat we will have to go out to get it!

Thanks again to Jenny for leading this blog, I hope everyone enjoyed their whole30 and will continue to eat clean! Remember, if you can kill it, pick it, or dig it then you can eat it!!

  6. okay so I took my measurements and my weight but I lost my my note pad that I wrote done my numbers.
    The only one's I do know are;
Weight down 9 lbs!!!!!!! ( I hear you Jenny on the weight loss)
I have a lot more to go so I think I will stick with it for about 90% I don't miss the sugar at all really its the wine:)'
It just goes so nice with a Paleo diet of steak and prawns
I also lost 5 inches in my waist now I do have to say that I was pretty blotted after all that Christmas and holiday treats so the number is a bit inflated.
What I notice the most and I don't know how to explain it but I have never been one to be organized in the kitchen and I guess because I had to I have become a machine in the kitchen and I kind of enjoy it.(Dan is usually the master in the kitchen as most fireman are)
I found that i was focused so much on the food choices that I really didn't take my exercise to the next level so that is my next step.
At our work we have a company wide Biggest loser challenge and it is until the end of march so I plan on staying WHOLE30 until then.
I have about 50lbs to loose so this is a great way to start.
My challenge was eating enough foods with calcium, I was getting tired of kale and spinach so I need to work on that.
Thank you Jen for all your support!
    Good luck everyone!
    Lory
